The HK 21 is a general purpose machine gun based on the HK G3 rifle and chambered for 7.62x51mm or 5.56x45mm NATO rounds. It can fire from magazine, belt or drum and has a detachable bipod and a two-position lever for fire mode selection.

The weapon is in use with the armed forces of several Asian, African and Latin American countries. It was also license-manufactured by Fábrica de Braço de Prata in Portugal as the m/968 and in Mexico by SEDENA as the MG21.

The HK 21 is an early Cold War era machine gun of German origin. It was developed to supplement the G3 battle rifle and about half of the parts are interchangeable. The HK 21 was a quite unique machine gun upon introduction. It was much lighter and allowed for semi-automatic fire.
